When you had your last appointment at your dentist’s office, your dentist examined your teeth and gums, but you may not have been aware that the dentist was also performing an oral cancer screening as part of his examination. Oral cancer screening is an important part of a routine dental exam, and it can help you to maintain your overall health and well-being.

Oral cancer is a serious and potentially life threatening disease that can affect any part of the mouth, including the tongue, lips, gums, and roof or floor of the mouth. While oral cancer is more prevalent in patients who use tobacco products or alcohol, it’s a threat to the general population as well. Oral cancer screening is important because it can help to detect cancer or precancerous conditions of the mouth and throat in their earliest stages, when they’re most likely to respond to treatment.

During an oral cancer screening, your dentist or doctor will examine your mouth, throat, and neck for any signs of cancerous conditions, such as white or red patches, sores that don’t heal, strange lumps, or changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite. If the dentist notices any signs of cancer, further testing or treatment may be recommended.

To maintain sound dental health, you should always visit your dental office at least twice a year. If you neglect these visits, you put yourself at risk for tooth decay, gum disease, and other dental problems, but you also risk developing oral cancers.
