How Long Does a Teeth Cleaning Last_

No matter how well you care for your teeth by brushing, flossing, and rinsing, you need to have your teeth professionally cleaned on a regular basis. Having your teeth cleaned regularly helps to prevent tooth and gum problems, but good oral hygiene is important for your overall health as well.

When you go in for a routine teeth cleaning, the dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from your teeth, then polish and floss them. In addition, your dentist will examine your teeth and your entire mouth to look for any potential problems. This entire process usually lasts from 30 to 45 minutes and is well worth the time.

How often you have this done can vary, depending on how well you take care of your teeth, how rapidly your teeth accumulate plaque and tartar, and your risk of developing dental problems. Generally speaking, most people should visit their dentist every six months. However, some people may require more frequent cleaning.

To see if you may need more frequent cleaning, answer the following questions:

  • Are you skipping flossing more than 3 or 4 days a week?
  • Do you notice any bleeding during flossing?
  • Did your hygienist mention any bleeding or inflammation at your last teeth cleaning?
  • Do you experience chronic bad breath?
  • Do you smoke or chew tobacco?
  • Are you unable to do a thorough job with your oral hygiene at home due to a health condition?
  • Do you have gum disease or a history of frequent cavities?

If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, you should probably have your teeth cleaned more frequently.  It’s best to consult with your dentist to determine the recommended frequency of teeth cleanings for your specific situation.
